Loveable mascot Gunnersaurs has been sacked after 27 years of service as part of the club’s latest coronavirus financial cuts.
Jerry Quy, who has played the role of the dinosaur mascot since its establishment in 1993, has been let go.
Arsenal have felt the absence of fans more than most with the club more reliant on their match-day revenue, and as such Gunnersaurus’ role is no longer deemed essential.
Arsenal announced they were making 55 redundancies in August because of the financial impact of the pandemic, a decision which was met with hostility from fans.
While Arsenal’s finances have undoubtedly been hit by the pandemic, Mesut Ozil earns £350,000 per week, which equates to £18million per year, despite falling out of favour with manager Mikel Arteta. Ozil has not played a single minute for Arsenal so far this season.
The Gunners also handed a bumper new contract to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang worth £250,000 per week in September and Willian was also given £220,000-a-week deal after signing from Chelsea.
Because Quy’s role is part-time, his departure is not counted among the 55 redundancies but is part of the same cost-cutting process.
