However, Gabriel Martinelli scored a stunning strike with a solo surge through the Chelsea backline before slotting an effort past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea regained the lead in the 84th minute as Cesar Azpilicueta diverted Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross into the net from close range.
Arsenal were not to be denied as they captailised on poor defending from the hosts, which allowed Hector Bellerin to curl home a late equaliser on his first start in six weeks. It was enough to secure the point for Mikel Arteta’s men and extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to five games.
Frank Lampard and Chelsea endured another frustrating game, failing to take advantage of their extra man on the pitch and the chance to move eight points clear of Manchester United in fifth place.
Chelsea are next in action on Saturday against Hull City on the road in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Arsenal are also away from home, playing Bournemouth on Sunday in the same stage of the competition.
