The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Bauchi State, has initiated an indefinite strike to demand better conditions of service from the university management.
The chairperson stated that the congress observed the university administration’s and government’s lack of willingness and commitment to address the union’s demands, despite numerous efforts on their part.
Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu, ASUU Chairman for the SAZU branch, addressed journalists after an emergency congress held at the Yuli campus. He explained that the congress had exhausted all available channels and that its repeated attempts to engage the university authorities had been unsuccessful.
The chairperson emphasized that the congress had recognized the administration’s and government’s unwillingness to address its concerns, even after several attempts to resolve the matter.
Nuhu further explained, “As a result, a union member proposed a motion for the branch to initiate a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, which was seconded by another member.”
The motion was subsequently passed, and the congress resolved that the branch would begin an indefinite strike, effective immediately.
“The strike began at 12:00 pm on Friday, November 29, 2024,” he confirmed. “All ASUU members at SAZU are expected to comply, as no academic activities or meetings will take place during the strike.”
“Members are directed to fully participate in the indefinite strike, which includes suspending activities such as teaching, marking, meetings, accreditation, and all other academic staff-related duties until further notice.”
