Annette Echikunwoke, a 28-year-old hammer thrower, has made history by becoming the first American athlete to win a medal in the event at the Olympics, claiming silver with a throw of 75.48m.
Born in the USA to Nigerian parents, Echikunwoke previously represented Nigeria, setting national and continental records with a throw of 75.49m.
However, she switched allegiance back to the USA after the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) failed to conduct mandatory tests, leading to her disqualification from the Tokyo Olympics.
Echikunwoke was one of ten Nigerian athletes ruled out of the competition due to the AFN’s negligence.
She spoke out against the federation’s claims that athletes were unavailable for testing, providing receipts to prove she had disclosed her whereabouts information.
Echikunwoke’s decision to represent the USA has now paid off, as she stands on the Olympic podium, a testament to her hard work and determination.
