The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has been buried at his Igbeba residence in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, following his d3ath on Sunday at the age of 91
His burial took place on Monday at 6:00 p.m., in line with Islamic rites, as the revered monarch was laid to rest in a specially built mausoleum.
Oba Adetona, who reigned for an extraordinary 65 years, ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, making him the longest-serving Awujale in history. He was widely regarded for his visionary leadership, strong stance on justice and integrity, and his unwavering commitment to preserving Ijebu culture.
He was also the driving force behind the globally recognized Ojude Oba festival, a colourful annual event that showcases the rich heritage and unity of the Ijebu people.
Dignitaries present at the solemn burial included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Ogun Governor Gbenga Daniel, business mogul Aliko Dangote, and Fuji legend K1 De Ultimate, among others.
Oba Adetona’s death came just hours after the passing of his close friend and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a London hospital after a long illness.
