Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, bringing an end to his 18-year association with the Blues
The 24-year-old England international informed Atletico officials of his decision on Sunday night, paving the way for a £33m transfer.
Gallagher is expected to undergo a medical and sign a contract with the Spanish club, having turned down a two-year extension offer from Chelsea due to concerns over the contract length and his role in the team.
The midfielder’s departure comes as Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, plans to implement a possession-based style of play, which Gallagher is not suited for.
With less than a year left on his current deal, Chelsea opted to sell Gallagher to Atletico Madrid rather than a Premier League rival, allowing the Spanish club to secure a cut-price deal.
Gallagher, who featured in five matches at Euro 2024, will now embark on a new chapter in his career with Atletico Madrid.
