Mexican football chiefs have said they will investigate Maradona after he attacked Donald Trump after a league match last weekend.
The football legend, an outspoken critic of South America’s conservative governments and a friend of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, landed himself in hot water by branding the American president a “tyrant” after his side Dorados de Sinaloa beat Tampico Madero last Sunday.
An ethics code prevents Mexican managers from making political comments at a match.
At the start of a post-match press conference, Maradona dedicated his side’s win to Venezuela’s disputed president Nicolas Maduro, saying: “I want to dedicate this triumph to Nicolas Maduro, because the world sheriffs are the Yankees and because they think they can crush us because they have the biggest bomb in the world.
“Not us, that tyrant they have as their President can’t buy us.”
He went on to brand Trump a puppet.
A spokesman for the Mexican Football Federation confirmed: “An investigation has been opened into an alleged infraction of the Federation’s Code of Ethics over the comments made in a press conference after the match that was played on March 31 2019.”
