Liverpool advance to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup courtesy of a 5-4 victory over Arsenal on penalties after the contest ended 5-5 at the end of 90 minutes.
It was a frenetic game from start to the finish. The Reds took the lead through an own goal from Shkodran Mustafi, only to be pegged back by a strike from Lucas Torreria and a brace from Gabriel Martinelli.
James Milner scored from the spot before half-time to reduce the deficit, but the Gunners extended their advantage through Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the second half.
However, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired home a stunning volley before a turn and finish from Divock Origi earned parity for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Joe Willock responded with a spectacular strike of his own to send Arsenal back into the lead and it looked to be enough for the win before Origi notched his second of the game in stoppage time.
Dani Ceballos was denied by Caoimhin Kelleher in the shootout to allow Liverpool to advance as Curtis Jones scored the decisive penalty.
