England beat Denmark in historic victory to reach Euro 2020 final

An extra-time winner from Captain Kane takes England to the first major final since 1966, where they face Italy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

England defeated Denmark to reach the Euro 2020 final, winning their first semi-final since the 1966 World Cup, when Harry Kaneโ€™s extra-time goal gave them a 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

England had to come from behind as an own goal by Simon Kjaer canceled Mikkel Damsgaardโ€™s beautiful free kick for the Danes in the first half.

The home side were on top the entire time, but struggled to break through Denmarkโ€™s battling defence. England were awarded a penalty 103 minutes into the game after Raheem Sterling went down with minimal contact, allowing captain Kane to decide the match.

It was a tough way for Denmark to end their emotional ride from the anguish and grief of Christian Eriksenโ€™s opening match collapse to their first semi-final since their shocking Euro 92 win, but their exhausted players left Wembley with their socks rolled up. but with your head held high.

England return to Wembley on Sunday, 55 years after winning the World Cup there, but they did it the hard way.

They had reached the semi-finals without conceding a goal and it took something special to break through their rear guard as Damsgaard fired a powerful 25-yard free kick over the wall and past the diving Jordan Pickford โ€“ the tournamentโ€™s first goal straight from a free kick โ€“ After 30 minutes.

Raheem Sterling was denied from close range by Kasper Schmeichel for the 39th minute equalizer, when Bukayo Saka hit the byline and sizzled over a low cross that bundled Kjaer across his own line in his attempt to prevent the ball from reaching Sterling.

Schmeichel was on hand again with an excellent dive save to palm off a header from Harry Maguire and England started to turn things around.

However, despite all the pressure and relentless passing and groping around the penalty area, England struggled to make a clear opening and the game ended in extra time.

The extra 30 minutes turned into a virtual attack versus defense exercise, as Schmeichel again saved from Kane and Jack Grealish.

Sterling continued to drive into the penalty area and was eventually knocked down by Joakim Maehle for the VAR-rated penalty that badly stuck Kane and blocked Schmeichel, only for the captain to work the rebound in.
