The blast occurred at a local hotel during breakfast hours, injuring several others.

Police suspect the explosion, caused by an improvised explosive device, to be the work of the al-Shabab extremist group, known for previous attacks in Kenya and Somalia. Though unclaimed, the incident aligns with the group’s modus operandi.

This tragedy follows another attack in Lamu County, where two police reservists lost their lives. Mandera’s proximity to a forest, a frequent hiding spot for militants, has made it a hotspot for security operations.

In a separate incident, a police operation in Garissa County uncovered explosives and firearms, indicative of ongoing security challenges in the region. The border area with Somalia remains vulnerable to militant infiltrations and attacks, prompting the Kenyan government to postpone plans to reopen the border.

The incident underscores the persistent security threats facing Kenya and the region, necessitating continued vigilance and collaborative efforts to combat terrorism.
