Families of slain Borno farmers get N600,000 each

The Borno State Government has doled out N600,000 each to forty-eight families affected by the killing of farmers in Zabarmari, Jere LGA.

In addition to the cash gift, the bereaved families also got food items like rice, beans, maize, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomatoes and sachets of salt.

Recall that the Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Zulum had set up a committee headed by Saina Buba, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports to look into issues surrounding the Zabarmari massacre.

Saina Buba who undertook delivery of the items said that the cash gifts came from Northern Governors Forum (NGF) and North East Development Commission (NEDC), while the food items were donated by Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development

Buba noted that N20m was given by NGF while N5m was from NEDC.

Borno government had earlier given each family N200,000 on Zulum’s directive.

“A total of 13,000 Bag of Rice, Maize and Beans, 1,300 cans of vegetable oil, 2116 cartons of seasoning Cubes, 1083 Tomato and 650 sachet of salts were donated by Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development,” said the Committee Chairman, Buba.

He noted that each family was to combine the N600,000 cash and food varieties not as compensation for the deaths of their loved ones, but to reduce hardship resulting from gaps in access to livelihoods created by the death of mostly male victims, who are breadwinners of those affected.
