The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has dismissed the rumours making the rounds that one of the officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila was behind the reported murder of a newspaper vendor, Ifeanyi Okereke, in Abuja.
According to a statement, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mariam Yusuf clarified that the security agent was not a police operative.
The incident occurred at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, on Thursday evening when Gbajabiamila’s convoy was on the move.
Gbajabiamila personally confirmed the incident in the wee hours of Friday through his Twitter page, disclosing that the security aide who fired the fatal shot has been suspended.
The FCT Police spokesperson said: “Contrary to the misleading information, preliminary investigation into the unfortunate incident reveals that the security aide who shot at the vendor is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Yusuf said the Commissioner of Police in FCT, Bala Ciroma has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The Police also commiserated with the family and friends of the deceased while assuring that thorough investigation will be done and the findings are made public.
