There are indications that a former governor of Benue state, Gabriel Suswam, may have concluded plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of 2019 general elections.

Leadership reports that Suswam on Monday, July 23, held a meeting with Senator George Akume as his plans to dump Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reportedly intensified.

The newspaper states that loyalists of the former governor contending for elective positions in 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) have started removing the PDP’s logo on their posters.

A source privy to the reported defection plan said the APC has already given Suswam an automatic ticket for Benue zone A senatorial seat.

In another report, the intrigues in the Nigerian political scene continued on Monday, July 23, as the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approved the the fusion of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC) into its fold.

Vanguard newspaper reports that the PDP also set up a committee to consider the possibility of changing the party’s name ahead of the 2019 general elections.

“The responsibility of the harmonisation committee is to commence the process of the possibility of change of name as part of effort to re-brand our party and to reposition it for 2019 general elections,” the spokesperson for the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, told journalists after the NEC meeting.
