Ghana Police Arrest Nigerian Drug Trafficker, Reject $20,000 Bribe

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian national, Charles Adekunle, for alleged drug trafficking after intercepting him with illicit substances valued at ₦134.7 million along the Accra–Sogakope Highway.

Adekunle, aged 46, was apprehended on January 21 at about 6:30 p.m. while driving a black Liberty Jeep. He was stopped at the Kpotame Police checkpoint near Sogakope following actionable intelligence on his movement.

According to police sources, the suspect attempted to evade arrest by offering the officers on duty a $20,000 bribe, an offer which was firmly rejected. He was immediately taken into custody, while his vehicle was impounded and transferred to the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho for further investigation.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 10 parcels of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine, along with approximately half a kilogram of compressed dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp. The drugs were reportedly concealed behind the vehicle’s inner lining in an attempt to avoid detection.

Confirming the arrest, the Volta Region Police Commander, DCOP Wilson Akorli, disclosed that the operation was intelligence-driven. He stated that a joint task force comprising the Police Intelligence Unit, Drug Law Enforcement Unit, and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) was deployed to closely monitor and intercept the suspect.

DCOP Akorli praised the officers involved for their professionalism and integrity, emphasizing the Ghana Police Service’s zero tolerance for corruption and its commitment to combating drug trafficking across the country.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once the process is concluded.
