The Minority Leader of the Gombe State House of Assembly Mallam Ahmed Usman Haruna, has defected from the All Progressives Congress to the People’s Democratic Party.
Announcing the defection on the floor of the house during plenary, Mallam Haruna, representing Gombe North State Constituency, said his decision was because the All Progressives Congress failed to address his grievances after he was unconstitutionally suspended in May this year.
He said his suspension did not follow due process and his petition afterwards to the zonal and national secretariat of the party was not responded to, up to date, hence his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress Party for the People’s Democratic Party.
“An unconstitutional decision was taken about my personality, which of course I wrote to the zonal office, I wrote to the national office and nothing was done on that. So, if at all we are running a political party and a political party that cannot consider its members, that means we are not fit to call ourselves politicians. And for a politician to be politicians, you have to do things democratically. If at all we are not going to take decisions democratically, that means we are not running a political party, we are only managing ourselves as a one-man show or as group of people,” said the former Minority Leader.
He also said his defection was a journey in search of greener pasture for the people in his constituency.
The Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Nasiru Abubakar Nono, welcomed the new member into the People’s Democratic Party, saying he will not regret the action he took in joining them.
Also responding, the Majority Leader at the house, Mr. Fabulous Amos, welcomed the former Minority Leader into the People’ Democratic party, describing him as a material for the progress of the party.
