The man’s right shoe was knocked off his foot as the animal charged him the first time and dumped him on the ground before he was gored several times and left critically injured.

He died shortly after being rushed away from the scene to a nearby health centre.

Footage of the incident showed him trying to hoist himself to safety by grabbing onto metal railings over a ground-floor apartment window, wearing only shorts and a T-shirt, before he was knocked off balance.

The drama occurred yesterday evening just after 6.30pm in a picturesque tourist town called Ubrique in Spain’s south-west province of Cadiz, which was celebrating the 10th edition of an event called the Toro del Gayumbo.

Two bulls were released onto the streets as part of the spectacle, one at 12.30pm and another at 6.30pm, with the second of the animals called Mosquetero which in English is Musketeer, being the one that charged and killed the 57-year-old local.

His death was confirmed just after 8pm last night. He has not been officially named.

Town hall officials said afterwards they were declaring a day of mourning to coincide with the day of their patron saint today as part of Ubrique’s annual feria.

They said in their statement yesterday: ‘We would like to express our sincere condolences and solidarity to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased.

‘We would also like to announce that, as a sign of respect, tonight’s fireworks display has been cancelled.

‘In addition, flags on public buildings will fly at half-mast tomorrow as a sign of mourning.

‘We ask for understanding, calm and cooperation from all residents and visitors, reminding everyone that the best way to show support is through prudence and respect.

‘Ubrique has always been characterised by its unity in difficult times. Today, more than ever, we must demonstrate this.’

Local Isabel Carrasco Romero reacted by saying: ‘My deepest condolences to the family of our deceased neighbour.

‘This would have been a preventable death if our council did not promote these kinds of backward events under the guise of tradition.
