Nigeria may soon have a new federal university dedicated to the promotion of Nigerian languages and cultures.

The House of Representatives has passed the first reading of a bill to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others.
The proposed university aims to encourage the advancement of learning and provide higher education opportunities in Nigerian languages and cultures.
The university’s objectives include teaching and training Nigerian language professionals, providing language services and consultancy, conducting research, and participating in outreach and community services.
The President, as the university’s visitor, will have the power to conduct visits and remove council members, except the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, on grounds of misconduct or inability to perform their duties.
The bill is expected to undergo a second reading and public hearing to gather stakeholders’ input.
