If You Can’t Kneel Down for Him, Don’t Marry Him — Pastor Seyi Obembe
Pastor Seyi Obembe has advised couples to understand each other’s expectations regarding honour in marriage, recounting how a man ended his relationship after his fiancée reluctantly knelt to apologise to him.
Speaking during a church service in September, Obembe said he had persuaded the woman to kneel before her fiancé while mediating their relationship issues. However, the man later declared he could not marry her because his pastor had to persuade her to kneel.
The cleric explained that while honour is biblical, culture influences how people express it.
“I honour my husband, but you are not honouring him in a language he understands. In your mind, you are honouring him, but you are not speaking the language of honour to him,” he said.
However, Obembe cautioned men against forcing their wives to kneel, noting that honour can be expressed in different ways.
“She can express honour to you without necessarily kneeling down for you. But sisters, if you marry a man who genuinely feels honoured when you kneel down, please make it a practice”.
“Don’t kneel down for him on your engagement day if you don’t plan to continue. It’s eye service,” he added.
