In a surprise move, Manchester City has agreed to re-sign midfielder Ilkay Gundogan from FC Barcelona on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old German international will return to the Etihad Stadium for a second spell, just one season after leaving for the Camp Nou.
Gundogan’s previous seven-year stint with Manchester City was marked by immense success, including 304 appearances, 60 goals, and 14 trophies.
He played a crucial role in the team’s treble-winning campaign in his final season, captaining the side to Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and Emirates FA Cup glory.
The midfielder’s return to Manchester City comes after a brief but eventful spell with FC Barcelona, where he featured 51 times last season.
However, due to the Catalan club’s financial constraints, Gundogan has been allowed to leave, and he will now sign a one-year contract with Manchester City, with the option of an additional 12 months.
This transfer marks a significant coup for Pep Guardiola’s side, who had been seeking to strengthen their midfield options this summer. Gundogan’s return is set to be the club’s second addition of the transfer window, following the arrival of Savinho from ES Troyes.
