In a historic victory, Claudia Sheinbaum of the Morena party has emerged as Mexico’s first female president-elect, securing an irreversible lead with 58% of the vote.
Her closest rival, Xóchitl Gálvez of the National Action Party (PAN), trailed behind with 26.6% of the vote.
In her triumphant speech, Claudia Sheinbaum declared, “I will become the first woman president of Mexico!”
This milestone marks a significant step forward for women’s representation in politics and governance, as Mexicans made their mark in the global push for inclusivity.
The June 2 general elections also saw the election of 628 federal lawmakers, eight governors, and officials for 1,580 municipalities, cementing Mexico’s commitment to democracy and peaceful transitions.
Claudia Sheinbaum, a former mayor of Mexico City, will succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, founder of the Morena party, and usher in a new era of leadership for the country.
