The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns about the quality of bread sold in markets, revealing that some producers are using saccharine instead of sugar due to high costs.

This substitution has led to bread products failing laboratory tests, posing potential health risks to consumers.

NAFDAC Southwest Coordinator, Mrs. Roseline Ajayi, addressed these issues during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Ibadan, warning manufacturers and dealers of regulated products against selling fake and substandard items.

According to Vanguard, she emphasized that the agency will not compromise its standards despite economic challenges.

According to Ajayi, NAFDAC’s recent operations uncovered several violations, including patent medicine dealers selling restricted drugs and unregistered products, as well as manufacturers failing to meet required packaging and storage standards.

Ajayi stressed that the agency prioritizes the quality and safety of regulated products, urging producers to adhere to standards and avoid introducing harmful ingredients into their products.

She acknowledged the economic challenges faced by manufacturers but emphasized that NAFDAC will not relax its standards to accommodate these challenges.
