Nairobi to give out free sanitary towels to girls every month

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has stated that he will mobilize Members of County Assembly (MCAs) through a consultative approach to provide a budget for sanitary towels in Nairobi.

The initiative, Sakaja said, will see school-going girls and those from informal settlements in the city get sanitary towels every month.

“I will ask my MCAs to make sure we can provide a budget for it,” Sakaja said.

Sakaja called for an end to Menstrual Health stigma, saying the pads drive will run concurrently with the Food for Education initiative that has already gained momentum.

“If we can give children food, why can’t we give girls sanitary towels? That is my commitment to you, always know that you have a champion on the entire gender agenda,” the governor added.

The governor spoke during the launch of a sanitary towel initiative by nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, in celebration of the World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

“When we had that trending topic, most people attacked me in social media governor but you stood with me and you understood what I went through on that day and am so and so honored to have you here today,” Orwoba recalled an incident where she was asked to leave the Senate chambers after showing up in stained pants.

Sakaja referred to Orwoba as a champion not only to the sanitary towel campaign but also to the gender agenda as well.
