The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has directed its members to begin an indefinite nationwide strike.
The strike starts on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at midnight, in protest of the non-payment of four months withheld salaries.
Despite President Bola Tinubuās approval to pay 50% of the withheld salaries, the Minister of Financeās inaction has raised concerns about the governmentās commitment to resolving the issue.
The strike is expected to disrupt university operations, impacting academic activities and studentsā learning experiences.
The Joint Action Committee regrets the situation and appreciates membersā commitment to the cause. The strike aims to pressure the government to address the issue and ensure the payment of withheld salaries.
A Trade Group Council Meeting of NASU branches in universities and inter-university centres is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, and Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
