The Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, effective November 5, 2024.
According to Vanguard, the strike was initiated due to the withholding of four months’ salaries. This announcement was made in a circular signed by NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim.
Despite the suspension of the strike, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has confirmed that it will continue its planned protest and picketing of the Federal Ministry of Finance. NAAT’s demands include the release of approximately 50% of withheld salaries for the past five months. The union issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government on October 30, which will expire on November 13.
NAAT President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, stated that members who have received one month’s salary out of the expected three remain committed to the scheduled protest. Nwokoma emphasized that the protest will proceed if the withheld salaries are not fully paid within the specified timeline.
