Nigeria is too small to hold Nollywood’s potential – Toyosi Etim Effiong

Toyosi Etim-Effiong, the founder of The Good Media, which aims to organize Nigeria’s film and TV industry, believes that Nollywood’s potential is too vast to be limited to Nigeria alone.

In a recent interview with Nollywire at the Nile Entertainment Group launch, she shared her thoughts on the positive impact Nile Entertainment could have on Nollywood.

“For a long time, people have been moving in the same direction, but now we see that there is space, there is room, and we’ve been called to occupy that space. It’s great to see Nile media taking up that space,” she said.

She expressed her hope that as competition in the industry grows, talented workers will be better compensated for their skills. “I’m looking forward to talents being remunerated even better. I believe that competition will help that. Let’s get more money in people’s pockets,” she added.

Etim-Effiong also expressed excitement about the new cinematic venture launched by Moses Babatope of Nile and Mo Abudu of EbonyLife. “I like the idea of more cinemas, a luxury line; I’m looking forward to that. I just want to see what that looks like and how it will be received in this landscape. It’s more jobs, more distribution for the content created—the industry is growing,” she said.

In her collaboration with Essence, an initiative focused on global Black storytelling, she emphasized the need for better marketing to promote Nollywood internationally. She believes that Nigeria alone cannot contain the power of Nollywood’s stories.

“I partnered with Essence for three years, getting Nollywood recognized, putting our content out there globally. I’ve always believed that Nigeria is too small to contain Nollywood. We just need to do more marketing because that’s what it is. When we go out and talk to international brands, it is marketing for Nollywood. Nollywood needs more marketing, and with Nile and the powerful group they’ve put together, I believe they know how to package the industry well. That’s what we want—global recognition and rewards,” she concluded.
