Nigerian Pilgrims lament over poor meals, despite N90 billion subsidy

Nigerian pilgrims who traveled to Saudi Arabia for the 2024 Hajj have expressed dissatisfaction with the food they are being served.

Despite paying over N8 million for the pilgrimage, they are concerned about the quality and quantity of the food.

A Facebook user, Babagana Digima, shared a picture showing a meager portion of pap and three bean cakes served for breakfast on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

Babagana Digima wrote, “After paying N8 million for Hajj, see the breakfast our pilgrims are being given!” Some pilgrims have already started begging for money to buy food, as the remaining $300 promised to them in Saudi Arabia (out of $500) has not been forthcoming from the authorities.

In response to the post, Muhammad Ahmad, a staff member of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), stated that the Nigerian authorities have begun investigating the issue.

Muhammad Ahmad wrote, “NAHCON is currently gathering information for a proper investigation, as the Commission provides feeding and accommodation in Madinah and supervises in Makkah.”

The staff later shared the menu for the day, which included pap, three pieces of bean cake, table water, tea, and bread.

However, another Facebook user, Baqeer Mohammed Awwal, who is currently performing the Hajj, mentioned that they did not receive the bread.

It is worth noting that the Nigerian government had announced spending N90 billion to subsidize the cost of the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage for citizens.
