A state High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara state capital city has threatened to imprison the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, over alleged contempt of court.
The court presided by Justice Ibrahim Yusuf made the declaration in a notice of consequences of disobedience of order if court (form 48).
The order dated 10 August, 2018 was signed by the registrar of the court and addressed to the IGP, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The judge in the order said: “Take notice that unless you obey the directions contained in the order of the High Court of Justice of Kwara State delivered on the 1st of August, 2018, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”
The order followed the disobedience of a previous one made for release Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed’s personal assistant on political matters, Olalekan Alabi.
Alabi was arrested by the police on Monday, May 30, over his alleged link with Offa banks robbery suspects.
However, he was granted an interim bail by Justice Yusuf on Wednesday, August 1, after declaring that his continued detention was illegal and not justifiable.
In the condition, Alabi was granted an interim bail of N20m with two reliable sureties in like sum.
The judge also held that the police had failed to justify why they had kept the governor’s aide in detention for over two months.
However, despite the court’s order, Alabi has remained in custody as the police have failed to release him.
