Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has confirmed the arrest of the organizers of a children’s carnival where a stampede claimed the lives of an unspecified number of children
The tragic incident occurred in the Bashorun area of Ibadan, as reported by Naija News. The event was scheduled for Wednesday, but some parents brought their children on Tuesday, while others arrived early on Wednesday.
The rush to gain entry into the venue triggered a stampede, raising fears of numerous fatalities among children.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Governor Makinde revealed that the state government had taken immediate steps to prevent further casualties. Security agents were deployed to restore order, while medical personnel and ambulances were sent to the scene.
Makinde said, “Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, the venue of an event organized for families.
“We have taken steps to ensure no further deaths are recorded by deploying security agents to restore order at the venue. Medical personnel and ambulances were also deployed, and the event has been halted. Attendees have been escorted out of the venue.
“While investigations are ongoing, the primary organizers of the event that led to this stampede have been taken into custody.”
