Plateau Widow Mourns Husband Killed While Protecting Community
For three years, she had watched her husband carry the burden of protecting their community while violence continued to threaten the people around them.
She pleaded with him to step away.
But he refused.
Now, the young widow is mourning him after he was killed alongside other members of a civilian watch group during an attack in Plateau State.
In an emotional video shared online by conflict reporter Masara Kim on Monday, the woman was seen crying during her husband’s burial and describing the decision he made to continue serving his community despite the danger.
Speaking in Hausa, she portrayed her late husband as a community youth leader who believed he had a responsibility to protect residents who could not defend themselves.
According to her account, she repeatedly asked him to resign from the leadership role because the prolonged insecurity was taking a heavy toll on their family.
Her pleas, however, did not change his mind.
She said her husband believed leaving his position would expose vulnerable families to further attacks. In his view, protecting the community was a responsibility he could not simply abandon.
The widow recalled that he told her he considered the work a duty entrusted to him by God and that he would rather lose his life while defending his people than watch the community be destroyed.
That decision eventually had a devastating consequence.
The man and other members of the civilian watch post were killed during an attack, leaving their families to mourn them.
His burial was held in a mass grave alongside colleagues who also died in the incident.
As she stood at the burial, the widow struggled through her grief, describing her husband as a hero and praying that God would forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.
She also prayed for two of his colleagues, identified as Barry and Danny.
Her message was not only about the man she had lost, but also about the price families continue to pay when communities remain exposed to violent attacks.
The incident reportedly took place in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, where three vigilantes were killed on Friday, September 25.
According to SaharaReporters, the attackers struck at about 1 a.m., targeting members of the civilian watch structure who were protecting the community.
The killings triggered anger among residents.
Women and youths reportedly took to the streets and blocked the Jos-Barkin Ladi highway, protesting the worsening security situation and demanding greater protection for communities in the area.
Among those killed was the community’s youth leader — the same man his wife had repeatedly begged to abandon the role.
In her final tribute, the widow prayed that the deaths of her husband and his colleagues would not be forgotten.
She asked God to strengthen her as she faced life without the man she had repeatedly warned about the dangers of his community service.
Her husband’s story has now become another painful reminder of the risks faced by civilian volunteers and community leaders operating in areas affected by recurring violence.
For his widow, however, the wider security crisis has been reduced to something painfully personal: a husband who left home determined to protect others, and never returned.
