President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja from Accra, Ghana, where he attended the 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU).

Tinubu arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja around 10pm on Sunday and was welcomed by senior government officials.

During the meeting in Ghana, President Tinubu, in his capacity as Chairman of ECOWAS, updated attendees on the region’s progress. He spoke about ECOWAS’ accomplishments in counter-terrorism, electoral support, economic integration, humanitarian efforts, education, health, energy, mines, and agriculture.

Tinubu highlighted the activation of a Standby Force to combat terrorism, support for member states in improving electoral and governance processes, and efforts to strengthen the free trade area, customs union, and common market.

He also mentioned ECOWAS’ humanitarian initiatives, including a $9 million allocation for assisting vulnerable groups and support for frontline member states battling terrorism.

Acknowledging challenges, President Tinubu addressed issues such as multiple threats, geopolitical tensions, terrorism, food insecurity, climate change, and misinformation. He reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to unity, dialogue with member states, and announced plans for a Special Extra-ordinary Summit on the future of the Community.

On the sidelines of the meeting, President Tinubu held talks with President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, agreeing to continue cooperation to advance bilateral interests.
