President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, to offer condolences and support to the state government and residents affected by the recent devastating floods.
The President, who returned from London on Sunday, will evaluate the impact of the flood on critical infrastructure, including homes, hospitals, markets, schools, and public facilities.
According to PUNCH, upon arrival at Maiduguri International Airport, President Tinubu was received by Governor Babagana Zulum and other state officials.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that nearly half of Maiduguri was submerged in water after the Alau Dam overflowed due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the worst flooding in 30 years.
According to NEMA, over 23,000 households have been affected, with 70% of Maiduguri initially submerged. The floodwaters have since receded.
Key locations affected include the palace of the Shehu of Borno, state secretariat, post office, cemetery, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo, houses, schools, commercial centers, and worship centers.
President Tinubu had previously expressed concern over the flooding and directed relevant agencies to expedite rescue efforts and evacuate residents from flood-affected communities.
