Six arrested in connection with killing of South African player Luke Fleurs

Six individuals have been apprehended by the South African police service (SAPS) for their alleged involvement in the murder of footballer and Olympian Luke Fleurs. Fleurs, aged 24, was fatally shot during an incident at a petrol station in Johannesburg’s Honeydew suburb on April 3rd.Six arrested in connection with killing of South African player Luke Fleurs

The breakthrough in the case was announced through a statement by the police, revealing that a specialized team led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni successfully tracked down and arrested the suspects. The arrested individuals were found in Slovoville, Soweto, and were linked to the hijacking and killing of the Kaizer Chiefs player. Additionally, Fleurs’ vehicle, which had been stripped, was recovered a day prior.

The police suspect the arrested individuals to be part of a larger criminal syndicate responsible for car hijackings in Gauteng, and efforts to apprehend more suspects are ongoing.

The team involved in the operation, led by Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Crime Detection Major General Mbuso Khumalo, comprises various specialized units including the tracking team, SAPS Provincial Investigation Unit, SAPS National Crime Intelligence, SAPS Drone Unit, Honeydew Detectives, Honeydew Crime Intelligence, CAP Special Operations, and Fidelity Specialized Services.

The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday, April 12, 2024.
