Manchester United drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Sunday to continue their unbeaten domestic start to life under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The caretaker boss remains undefeated domestically since taking over at Old Trafford – the Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain the only blot on his copybook.
That has seen United drag themselves into top four contention and means that their last Premier League defeat remains Jose Mourinho’s final game as boss.
Ironically, that was the 3-1 defeat at Anfield, in which United were comprehensively outplayed and Paul Pogba – in outstanding form under Solskjaer – sat on the bench for the duration.
That loss was the final straw for the United board with Mourinho.
According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho confided to friends via text message after the encounter that time had run out.
“I’m done after this” he told members of his inner circle.
However, he also defiantly added: “But I’m not quitting”.
Within days, Mourinho had been handed his marching orders by United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, Solskjaer was in as caretaker, Pogba was reinstated to the starting lineup and Cardiff were dismantled 5-1 in south Wales, in a sign of what was to come.
