President Bola Tinubu has hailed Lagos for making history as the first African city to host the E1 Electric Powerboat Championship, describing the event as a milestone for clean energy, marine innovation, and the blue economy
In a goodwill message delivered on Friday through the Lagos State Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the President congratulated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the organisers for bringing the prestigious global competition to Nigeria.

“This championship is not merely a thrilling spectacle on water but a statement of intent,” Tinubu said. “The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation, showcasing electric-powered vessels that point the way to a greener and more sustainable future.”
Tinubu noted that the event aligns with his administration’s vision for Nigeria’s blue economy, which focuses on renewable energy, marine tourism, and coastal infrastructure development. He said such initiatives would create jobs, empower the youth, and strengthen Nigeria’s global presence.

Proudly identifying himself as a Lagosian, Tinubu praised the state as the ideal host. “Lagos, the cultural capital of Nigeria, the heartbeat of our economy, and a symbol of our resilience, is the perfect host. Its vibrant waterways and dynamic people embody the spirit of competition, creativity, and hospitality,” he said.
The opening ceremony, held at the Lagos Boat Club in Ikoyi, featured a regatta led by Governor Sanwo-Olu and shakedown runs by participating teams. Sanwo-Olu described the event as more than a sporting competition, highlighting its role in showcasing Lagos’ innovation and sustainability drive.
“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism — the Spirit of Lagos,” the governor stated.
