President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States, claiming the measure will protect the American film industry from foreign competition
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said:
“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.
California with it’s weak and incompetent governor has been particularly hard hit. Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% tariff on any and all movies that are made outside the United States.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Make America great again. President DJT.”
Hollywood productions increasingly rely on international locations such as Canada, the UK, and Australia for tax incentives, financing, and resources. Analysts warn that a 100% tariff could disrupt global production workflows, raise costs for studios and consumers, and impact thousands of U.S. industry workers. However, some labor leaders, including the Teamsters, have voiced support, seeing the move as a way to promote domestic film jobs.
The proposed tariff comes amid a broader set of trade measures Trump has announced, including duties on imported furniture, branded drugs, heavy trucks, kitchen cabinets, and vanities. Major studios and the White House have not yet commented on the announcement, though some stock prices, including those of Warner Bros. and Netflix, reportedly fell following the news.
