There is something happening in Igbo land today. Our people are no longer joining the Army, Police or any other security forces — Gov. Soludo laments
Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has described the negative perception of the armed forces among youths in Igboland as a “phenomenon happening in Igboland today,” while explaining how military personnel from Anambra are inspiring younger generations.
Speaking on the issue, Soludo said the perception of the military among youths in the South-East was “very, very bad.”
He referenced chants in Anambra that repeatedly mention the police and the armed forces, explaining that the situation also reflects the influence of the state’s indigenes who have distinguished themselves in military service.
According to the governor, the exemplary records of Anambra indigenes in the armed forces have helped motivate young people to consider joining the institution.
He explained that seeing people from their communities attain prominent positions in the military encourages other youths to follow in their footsteps.
Soludo specifically cited the influence of a Lieutenant General, noting that the achievements of such individuals have made young people more eager to pursue careers in the armed forces.
He said the accomplishments of Anambra indigenes have helped encourage, embolden and motivate youths in the state to aspire to similar heights.
The governor’s remarks highlighted the importance of role models in shaping young people’s attitudes towards the military, even amid what he described as a growing negative perception of the institution in Igboland.
