A 26-year-old Nigerian international student, Obanyeli Jesse Chima, has d+ed in London after suffering a severe breathing difficulties shortly after completing his master’s degree in Public Health.
Chima was waiting in a lounge to meet friends for a joint birthday celebration when he said he needed to step outside for fresh air. His breathing reportedly worsened rapidly, and despite using three inhalers, his condition did not improve.
One of his friends called an ambulance, but Chima collapsed while she was still speaking to the emergency operator. His friends immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) under the operator’s guidance.
Paramedics spent about two hours trying to stabilise him before rushing him to the hospital, where he was placed on life support. Doctors initially hoped he would suffer only memory loss, but two days later, tests confirmed that he was brain-de@d after showing no improvement.
Chima, who was a passionate Chelsea FC supporter and had previously worked at the club, leaves behind three siblings in Nigeria.
His friend, Eva, said his family had been saving money to travel to London for his graduation, but the funds may now be needed to bring him home for burial.
His friends are currently raising money to transport his body to Nigeria so that his family can give him a proper burial.
