Delta Police Arrest Teenage Suspect Over Viral Video Of Underage Girl In Ughelli Hotel
What happened inside a hotel in Ughelli, Delta State, later became the subject of a disturbing video that spread rapidly online.
At the centre of the incident is a 16-year-old girl and a group of boys, all said by the police to be under the age of 18.
The video reportedly showed the teenage girl being mocked by the boys over her menstrual period. But according to the Delta State Police Command, what happened before that recording is far more serious.
The police say the girl was sexually assaulted during the encounter.
Following the public reaction to the video, the Delta State Police Command moved to identify those involved. One of the boys suspected of recording the footage was subsequently arrested.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the development in a video shared on his X account on Friday. In the footage, he was seen speaking with the teenage girl and questioning some of the suspects.
And as the questioning continued, more details about what allegedly happened at the hotel began to emerge.
The girl told the police she was 16 years old.
She explained that she already knew the boys and had gone to the hotel with them. However, when asked about her relationship with one of them, she made it clear that she did not regard him as her boyfriend.
Police questioning then turned to a particularly important detail — whether the boys knew she was menstruating.
The girl said they did.
She also explained that the video in circulation was made after the alleged sexual encounter had already taken place.
Investigators then questioned one of the boys about what happened inside the room.
The teenager identified himself as 16-year-old Godstime. Another boy, identified as Goodluck, also told the police that he was 16.
During the questioning, the police sought to establish exactly how many of the boys had sexual contact with the girl.
One of the suspects said two boys had sex with her.
Goodluck, when questioned separately, also acknowledged having sexual intercourse with the girl on two occasions.
The police then asked whether the girl had informed them that she was on her period.
The suspect gave a different account, saying he had not been told.
That exchange became one of several points the police were examining as they tried to establish what happened inside the hotel and the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
But the investigation was not limited to what happened in the room.
SP Bright Edafe also questioned the teenagers about the video itself and their decision to record and mock the girl afterwards.
The police spokesperson expressed concern over the fact that both the girl and the boys involved were minors.
At one stage, Edafe examined a mobile phone said to belong to one of the 16-year-old suspects and questioned him about his activities.
He also asked about the teenager’s family situation.
The boy reportedly said he did not know where his father was and explained that his mother had another child.
For Edafe, the circumstances raised broader concerns about parental supervision and the environment in which the teenagers were being raised.
He argued that the situation reflected serious failures by the parents of both the girl and the boys.
The police spokesperson then used the incident to appeal directly to parents, urging them to take responsibility for the welfare, supervision and upbringing of their children.
The investigation is now continuing.
The police have confirmed that one of the boys suspected of recording the viral footage has been arrested, and Edafe said the suspect would face the consequences of his actions despite being a minor.
However, there are still unanswered questions.
The complete number of people who may have been involved has not been conclusively established. The precise offences applicable to each individual will also depend on the evidence gathered by investigators and the relevant juvenile justice procedures.
The police have not publicly disclosed the identities of the minors.
For now, what is established is that a video involving a 16-year-old girl and several underage boys triggered widespread concern, leading the Delta State Police Command to intervene and begin investigating what happened before, during and after the recording was made.
The case remains under investigation.
