The women aim to shed light on the struggles faced by parents nationwide who sacrifice meals to ensure their children are adequately fed.

Their collective effort is underscored by the publication of a Mothers Manifesto, advocating for the provision of nutritious free meals in all state schools.

The Mothers Manifesto also includes calls for an increase in Universal Credit and the minimum wage, along with a plea to reverse cuts to the overseas aid budget.

Commencing on Mother’s Day, this hunger strike is a follow-up to a similar protest conducted outside Downing Street last year.

Emma Hopkins, 55, the organizer of the hunger strike, expressed the sentiment behind their action, stating, “As mothers, we feel like we should be able to feed children and take care of them, and actually, many mothers are not able to do that both in the UK and globally.

I think it’s absolutely shameful that so many people here in the UK are struggling to manage to feed themselves – we’ve got millions of children who are below the poverty line in one of the richest nations.”

The mother-of-four from Totnes added, “We will sit outside Parliament with a table adorned with empty plates and utensils, symbolizing the stark reality faced by families struggling with food insecurity.”
