Peter Obi was faced with criticism for wishing General Yakubu Gowon a happy 90th birthday.
Peter Obi acknowledged the controversy surrounding his decision, given Gowon’s role as Nigeria’s military Head of State during the 1967-1970 civil war.
In a statement, Obi explained that his gesture was motivated by his belief in forgiveness and moving forward.
“As a leader, I must show that forgiveness is the ultimate heroism,” he said. Obi cited his Christian faith, referencing St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians, which emphasizes forgiveness.
Obi recognized the pain and suffering caused by the civil war but argued that holding onto anger and bitterness only perpetuates division.
He highlighted Nigeria’s efforts towards reconciliation, including the national burial of Biafra leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 2012.
Peter Obi urged those upset by his decision to join him in building a new Nigeria, where justice and good governance prevail. “Forgiveness sets us free,” he said. “Let’s create a country where hate and unforgiving spirits give way to justice.”
Obi’s message emphasized hope, unity, and Nigeria’s potential for renewal through forgiveness.
