The Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest of Queen Naomi Silekunola, Ooni of Ife’s estranged wife alongside six others in connection with the de.adly stampede at a funfair in Ibadan on Wednesday.
The police today confirmed 35 children di.ed in the stampede and six others were critically injured,
Queen Naomi is said to be the primary sponsor of the event.
The event, which held at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, was intended for 5,000 children but attracted over 7,500 attendees, according to a PUNCH Metro investigation.
The statement further disclosed that the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police leading the investigation.
The police also reassured residents of the area that “high-level patrols” would be conducted, and security operatives would be deployed to prevent exploitation of the tragic situation by hoodlums.
The Oyo State Police Command expressed its condolences to the affected families, assuring that justice would be served.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the stampede occurred when attendees rushed to enter the venue.
