Three men rescued after spelling ‘HELP’

Three men stranded on a Pacific island used palm fronds to spell out “HELP,” leading to their rescue by the US Navy and Coast Guard.

They had been fishing when their boat was damaged. Stranded on Pikelot Island, they survived by eating coconuts and drinking from a well.

A relative alerted rescue officials, and the sign was spotted by a Navy jet. The Coast Guard dropped supplies and a radio. When rescued, one of the Coast Guard officers turned out to be related to them.

This isn’t the first time Pikelot Island has seen such a rescue. In 2020, three other castaways were rescued after spelling out “SOS.” Accidents happen, but so do unexpected reunions.
